Gratitude and the Pink Ribbon

I write this from Florida where I’ve been for almost a week now. My mom has come through her breast cancer surgery and is recovering well, thank goodness! I spent the first two years of college pursuing nursing, now I’m playing nurse in my care for her. We’ve been so incredibly blessed by our friends and family through this trial and we are so so grateful for the sweet notes, prayers, flowers and general concern that’s been shown for my sweet mom. Thank you, friends, truly!

Below: a purse that was gifted to my mom after receiving her diagnosis, sitting in a chair in her office at work – a sort of “out of the office” photo I snapped the other day before surgery:

It’s been almost overwhelming the amount of support we’ve received. So many people have been affected by breast cancer, it’s only now that I’ve joined the group personally. Of course I’ve always supported the “pink ribbon” cause, but it definitely has a new meaning for my family and me.  We still can hardly believe we’re talking about cancer, it’s all happened so fast.

In a couple of days I’ll be joining a group of photographers in Orlando for a workshop benefitting Kristen Weaver’s charity, Images for a Cure. The idea behind Images for a Cure (IFAC) is that participating photographers donate their time and sitting fees from portrait sessions they shoot on one specific day to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. IFAC raised close to $30,000 in 2009 and 2010 alone! I have been sponsored, totally out of the blue, by Lauren Grove of Every Last Detail (a national wedding blog that educates brides and brings wedding inspiration to all) to attend the workshop this year. Sweet Lauren knew I was going to be in Florida for my mom’s surgery and wanted to make sure I attended this workshop that centers on a cause that is now SO near and dear to my heart. I don’t even know where to begin in thanking her, it is such a kind gesture. Lauren is one of the speakers at the workshop and I can’t wait to hug her in person on Wednesday!

Grateful,

I am so sorry to hear the news that your mother and family had to go through this hard time, but am thankful to hear that her surgery was well and she is recovering fabulously! Your mother is a beautiful woman (saw her photos here on your blog!) and seems like she has a strong heart. Best wishes to your entire family! xo
